Kay Locey and the AP Stylebook for her editors.

During the JEA/NSPA convention in Kansas City, I ran into mentor Kay Locey (Washington) at the JEA Bookstore, and she was carrying a new 2010 AP Stylebook.

Kay has a tradition of giving the new editors of the newspaper a copy of the AP Stylebook as a symbol of their new leadership responsibilities and, of course, to help them with those duties.

Kay said that this year’s editors had reminded her that they hadn’t received their official AP Stylebook, so Kay purchased a copy to give them when she got back to Puyallup, Wash., from the convention.

What a great (and affordable) tradition to start with a newspaper or yearbook staff.

Do you have any traditions you’ve established for the new editors of your publications? I’d be interested in hearing about those.
