Konnie Krislock shared the story of the censorship battle at the private school where she is working part-time as newspaper adviser.

Her final comment was: “Build your network.” Konnie was able to mobilize professional joumalists, her students and their parents, the SPLC, and more.

The following discussion included that new advisers don’t have such a network. Mentors can help their mentees develop those networks, but new advisers have job security issues that veteran advisers and mentors don’t. The discussion was still going when I had to leave to go back to the JEA board meeting.

Konnie’s story and the story of censorship in a school where Kay Phillips is mentoring are inclded in the fall issue of JEA Mentoring Matters.
