2012 Free Spirit Award winnersThe Al Neuharth Free Spirit Award is a great opportunity for high school media students to have a week-long, all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., to participate in a journalism conference at the Newseum.

The deadline for applying is Feb. 15.

To be eligible, the student must:

  1. Be a high school junior who will graduate in the Class of 2014.
  2. Be committed to pursuing a career in journalism.
  3. Demonstrate qualities of a “free spirit.”
  4. Be available to attend the conference July 13-18, 2013, in Washington D.C.

Last year, three students of JEA mentees were selected to represent their states at the Free Spirit and Journalism Conference.

The program is endorsed by the Journalism Education Association.
